PENC's School Outreach Efforts

Each year, PENC members volunteer to visit elementary and middle schools in their area to show students first-hand how science, math and technology help engineers create the world around them, and to encourage students to pursue technical careers. Through their efforts, PENC members make hundreds of school visits to connect with thousands of students.

National Engineers Week

Engineers Week, a formal coalition of more than 70 engineering, education, and cultural societies, and more than 50 corporations and government agencies, is dedicated to raising public awareness of engineers’ positive contributions to our quality of life. Engineers Week promotes recognition among parents, teachers and students of the importance of a technical education and a high level of math, science, and technology literacy, and motivates youths to pursue engineering careers in order to provide a diverse, vigorous and informed engineering workforce. Each year Engineers Week reaches thousands of schools, businesses, and community groups across the United States . Engineers Week programs and materials are accessible to those outside the U.S. as well.  Visit the National Engineers Week Foundation website for more information.

PENC supports this nation-wide effort by this by organizing volunteers to visit schools in order to demonstrate the relevance of science and math to their students in a creative and interactive way.  In a classroom visit, our volunteers could:

  • Provide hands on experiments that demonstrate teamwork and logical processes
  • Discuss their jobs and explain a "Day in the life of an engineer"
  • Discuss the reasons they chose engineering
  • Encourage, Facilitate, and support with volunteers, science fairs and science nights
