Growing North Carolina's Renewable Energy
This program provides an overview of the opportunities for further development of agriculturally-based biofuels and the use of such biofuels for the development of renewable energy in North Carolina. A case study is presented of a Waste-to-Energy project that has been operating for just over a year in North Carolina that is deriving renewable energy from swine waste; the only such project successfully operating, to date, in North Carolina.
OBJECTIVE: This program will provide an overview of the applicable regulations, design considerations, and challenges associated with the development of renewable energy from agricultural wastes in North Carolina, and provide participants with the lessons learned from a specific case study in North Carolina. Gus Simmons, P.E. is Vice President of Cavanaugh & Associates, P.A. having served as Principal Designer and Project Manager for projects in the municipal, private, and agricultural sectors; including innovative wastewater treatment / water reclamation plants, and municipal infrastructure systems. Gus graduated from North Carolina State University with a degree in Biological & Agricultural Engineering, with concentration in biological waste treatment.
