PENC Membership Campaign

11.1.2009 - 12.31.2010

Recruiting Tips

1)  Think about the value you derive from your PENC membership

You joined PENC for a reason.  Now is the time to reflect on the decision you made and determine the value you have gained from it.  This won't - and shouldn't - be the same for everyone, and it might not be the reason that your potential recruit will join.  But you should have a canned answer ready for when your prospects ask you, "What have you gotten from your PENC membership?"

2)  Familiarize yourself with the value of being a PENC member

People join PENC for different reasons. As a recruiter, you should be familiar with all of the benefits of membership so that you can appeal to the interests of your prospect.
  • Take some time to review the recruiter kit–a valuable set of tools to assist you.
  • Familiarize yourself with the benefits of PENC membership.  We have found the most popular to be:
    • Discounts on professional development seminars and opportunities to earn free PDHs (through online courses and webinars)
    • Networking opportunities - both local and statewide - that allow engineers to meet their professional peers.
    • PENC's work to protect licensure and scope of practice for licensed Professional Engineers.
    • Access to timely and relevant information through newsletters, magazines, and other communications.
3) The Conversation
  • The best way to recruit a new member is to ask!  Be prepared to have that conversation with potential members.
  • Have your membership materials on hand when you meet with your colleague or peer–they have a better chance of joining if it’s easy and on the spot.
  • Give your prospect a personal touch–visit their office or go out for lunch.
  • Place a call to your potential new member; it lends a personal touch to the recruitment process.
  • Write a personal letter or e-mail to your co-worker or friend.
  • Visit, call, write, and e-mail (or a mix of the bunch) for best results!
4) Information to Share with Possible Members

  • Direct them to the PENC website so that they can familiarize themselves with all of the perks of PENC membership.
  • Invite them to come with you to a chapter meeting - make sure to pick a meeting with a great topic!
  • Tell them about the seminars PENC offers in November and December and offer to send them registration information
  • Ask them to participate in a Brown Bag Webinar (the FREE monthly online seminars) or tell them about the free PDH opportunities through online courses
  • Forward a copy of the monthly Member Newsletter or monthly Legislative Update
  • Pass along the latest copy of the Professional Engineer, PENC's quarterly magazine
  • Explain how PENC has helped add to your professional knowledge, expand your professional network, and advance your career
  • Talk about the great friends you've made through PENC
  • Explain that their membership is actually a 3 for 1 deal - national, state, and local membership is included in membership dues.
4) Follow Up

After you do any of the above actions, be sure to follow up with the prospective member to see if they are interested in joining - either by mailing in an application or joining online.
