Engineer of the Year
Kenny Keel, PE (Utility Director -Town of Hillsborough)
Recognized for his outstanding efforts as an engineer and his continued service to PENC. Kenny has served on the Western Carolina Chapter Board of Directors, he currently serves on the PENC Executive Committee as Secretary and is an active member of the Central Carolina Chapter.
Young Engineer of the Year
Virginia Russell, PE, LEED AP BD+C (Project Manager - Dewberry)
Virginia is recognized across her industry as an outstanding engineer in the civil/site industry. Virginia currently serves as the Director of the Community Leadership Committee and has hosted several events and panels at NCSU and Duke this year in an effort to promote licensure and bridge the gap between academia and full time employement for students.
Distinguish Service
Bob Via, PE, FPENC (Lead Engineer - Progress Energy)
Bob Via is an icon of leadership in the engineering community. He has served on countless boards and committees and has been involved in the leadership of PENC on a local and state level. This year, Bob served as Past President for the local chapter when the outgoing President, Randy Gould, accepted a position in Moore County. Bob provided leadership and guidance to the chapter throughout the year.

Fall 2011
- PENC Golf Tournament raised money to support PENC’s Educational Foundation
- PENC Engineers Gala raised $6,000+ dollars for Educational Scholarships
- PENC-CCC hosted a night at the first NCSU home basketball game of the season
Winter 2011-2012
- Future Cities saw 19 teams from across the state participate in Raleigh
- MathCounts competition hosted students and schools from across the state in regional and
state competitions
- PENC-CCC hosted a career panel at NCSU during E-week
Spring 2012
- PENC-CCC hosted March Madness social event with NCSU student chapter
- PENC-CCC hosted Spring Seminars in Raleigh on Hydrofracking
- North Carolina MathCounts team placed 11th in the country!
