Program Overview: Dust Explosion Hazards
Normally harmless materials like flour, plastic, sugar, and metal can ignite and explode under the right conditions. A dust explosion can cause catastrophic loss of life, injuries, and destruction of buildings. The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) identified 281 combustible dust incidents between 1980 and 2005 that led to the deaths of 119 workers, injured 718. During this chapter meeting we will discuss the relevant explosive properties of powders such as minimum ignition energy, minimum exposable concentration, and minimum ignition temperature. The required conditions and characteristics for a dust cloud explosion and management of dust cloud explosion risks. Several regulatory standards used to minimize the risk of dust explosion will be reviewed.

John Bonnette, P.E. – Reliability and MRO Manager for DSM Dyneema LLC located in Greenville, NC
John began his career designing and fabricating pressure vessels and power piping with INCO Incorporated or Rocky Mount, he later supervised fabrication quality control for the company. John transitioned to Maintenance Engineer with PotashCorp Aurora working with the variety of engineering and maintenance challenges involving production of sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid. He is currently with DSM Dyneema and responsible for equipment reliability and MRO materials. John holds a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Tennessee at Knoxville, and a Masters in Business Administration from East Carolina University. John resides in Greenville, North Carolina with his wife Meredith and two daughters.

All ECC PENC members are invited to attend this meeting and presentation. You are welcome bring guests. A tasty dinner will be serviced by REP Express that will consist of a main course, two sides, salad, dessert, and tea. This will be our last meeting of the 2012-2013 Year before our summer break.
We will be presenting both The Earl W. Bonner Eastern Carolina Scholarship award for 2013 and The North Carolina State PENC Engineering Scholarship award for 2013 to Mr. Alex Bryan. Alex will be a junior next year in the Engineering program at East Carolina University with concentrations in Biomedical and Electrical Engineering. We will also be conducting our installation ceremony for our officers for the 2013-2014 year.
