In this role, you will be responsible for providing strategic programmatic direction in regards to design standards, as well as providing technical expertise, leadership and guidance to the Engineering units in Florida and the Carolinas, with an emphasis on substation design standards.

This position is responsible for developing design standards that take into account reliability, maintenance, cost, industry standards, and regulatory requirements, and is responsible for leading topic discussions with other departments including Generation and Distribution, in developing the standards.

This position is responsible for driving consistency within the organization and is responsible for ensuring adherence to approved design standards. Also, you will be responsible for leading topic discussions pertinent to both organizations and where consensus cannot be met, provides the final recommended/directional approach. This position is responsible for producing the governance documents which state the Department stance on a topic as well as design basis information, giving the Engineering group guidance on the necessary details they need to complete their task as well as providing basis for consistent approaches to system design. Implementation of the standards requires developing and implementing change management plans, and acting as project manager for the changes required to implement the new or revised standard.

Since this position has such a critical role in establishing technical direction and philosophy for the Department, the lead engineer should possess high technical competence with the majority of their work experience in the electric utility industry. Strong oral and written communication skills, ability to forge consensus in a diverse group, and the capacity to represent the organization in various forums are some other important skills required for success in this position.

Experience:
  • 10+ years of applicable quality assurance experience

The successful candidate will have a BS in civil engineering, registered as a professional engineer (PE) in NC, and a minimum of 10 years of drainage/storm water experience on roadway projects and knowledge of drainage design and modeling software. Ideal candidate will have experience managing and marketing hydraulic and storm water projects with NCDOT and the private development community. Candidate must demonstrate excellent communication skills and ability to work well in a team environment.

ENGINEERING (STUDENT) INTERN interested in traffic engineering/transportation studies and/or roadway design for both public and private sector projects. The ideal candidate will be completing a BSCE and aiming towards becoming a registered EI (and PE) and good communication skills.
